🇺🇸Helping Hand Hawai’i

If you’re looking for a unique way to give back on your next vacation to the Hawaiian islands, check out this organization!

Sustainable Coastlines Hawai’i is a non-profit organization that works with volunteers to help keep the coastlines of Hawaii plastic-free. They host daily beach cleanups with families, companies and individuals to help keep the island looking picturesque while keeping marine life safe. They also give informational lectures on how we can all play our part in keeping our oceans clean and the harmful effects of single-use plastics on the environment and our lovely marine creatures.

A group of us SASers partook in a two-hour beach cleanup with Sustainable Coastlines, or should I say SAStainable (heh), and enjoyed a mouth-watering, home-grown lunch at Kahuku Farms Cafe. They grow all of their vegetables on their property so everything is farm fresh!

We each were gifted a reusable, stainless-steel straw from Hawaii Eco Straw to help promote and support the reusable straw movement. This company donates reusable straws to cafes and restaurants around the Hawaiian islands for customers to take. I’ll link their website below for you all to check out their mission!

After lunch, our group set out to organize the plastic we collected into recyclable and waste plastics. We spent about an hour separating our plastic loot for it to be collected and properly disposed of the following day. Then the remainder of our day was spent basking in the warm, setting sun to close out our final port of call of SAS Fall 2018.

Work hard, play hard SASers!

It was so much fun getting to give back to our beautiful planet after circumnavigating it and experiencing all it has to offer us for four months. Hawai’i was the perfect ending to my semester abroad, thank you.
